The Craft: Cloisonné Enamel
Cloisonné is one of China's most intricate metalworking traditions — a technique used to decorate silver and copper objects since the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Thin silver wires are bent by hand and soldered onto the surface to form compartments (cloisons). Each compartment is then filled with colored enamel paste, fired in a kiln, and hand-polished until smooth. The result is a surface where color and metal exist at the same level — vivid, permanent, and unmistakably handmade.
Each piece is made by our craftsman in Yunnan, China — a region with a long history of silversmithing and enamel work. From wire-bending to final polish, a single hair stick takes approximately 30 hours to complete.
This piece uses that tradition to create a hair stick built around deep cobalt blue. The shade is achieved with mineral-based enamel, the same pigment source used in classical Chinese imperial objects. It does not fade, chip, or discolor with normal wear.
The Jade
At the tip, a piece of natural Hetian jade is hand-set into the silver mount. Hetian jade (nephrite) is sourced from Xinjiang Province and has been considered China's finest jade for over 3,000 years — prized for its dense texture, subtle translucency, and smooth surface that feels cool to the touch.
Each jade stone is individually selected. Natural variation in color, veining, and surface texture is expected and intentional — these are not flaws, but the signature of genuine, unprocessed stone.
Fit & Care
The shaft is S925 sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver alloyed for durability. At 170mm (6.7 inches), this stick is sized for medium to long hair — armpit length and beyond.
Please note: silver, unlike wood or bone, can bend under sustained pressure. This stick is best used for lighter to medium hair volumes. If your hair is extremely thick or very long and heavy, we recommend our wooden hair sticks or bone hair sticks, which offer greater rigidity.
Q: I've never used a hair stick before — is it difficult to learn?
Not at all. Most people get a secure hold within 2–3 tries. The basic technique: gather your hair into a loose bun, twist it once, then insert the stick diagonally through the base, angling it so it crosses underneath the bun and anchors against the scalp. For step-by-step video guides, visit our YouTube channel @thehairsticks.
Q: How do I keep it from sliding out?
Two things make the biggest difference. First, slightly dry or day-2 hair grips far better than freshly washed hair. Second, insert the stick at a diagonal angle through the base of the bun rather than straight through.
Q: Will a hair stick damage my hair?
Hair sticks are one of the gentlest hair accessories available. Unlike elastics, they create no tension or pulling on the hair shaft. Long-term hair stick users often find it reduces breakage compared to everyday clip or elastic use.
