The Craft: Butterfly Inlay

Each fork begins with two ebony wood prongs, carved and smoothed to a uniform finish. A butterfly motif is assembled from natural white shell wings and a central agate stone, set in a gold-plated copper frame. The inlay is affixed to the top of the prongs, creating a single decorative unit.

The design draws from the image of butterflies emerging from cocoons, with the iridescent shell wings catching light at different angles. No two shell pieces are identical in grain or color, giving each fork a slightly different appearance.

The Materials

Ebony wood is dense and dark, providing a sturdy base for the inlay. Natural white shell (mother-of-pearl) is cut and shaped into wing forms, then polished to reveal its natural luster. The agate stone in the center is a green circular cabochon, set in a gold-plated bezel. Gold-plated copper forms the metal framework that holds the wings and stone together.

Because shell and agate are natural materials, you may see slight variations in color, iridescence, and grain. These are not flaws but signs of genuine stone and shell.

Fit & Care

This hair fork is best for fine to medium hair, or for creating smaller buns on thicker hair. The two-prong design provides more hold than a single stick but is still suited for lighter hair volumes. If you have very thick or heavy hair, consider a longer single stick from our wooden hair sticks collection for a more secure fit.

Care: Wipe with a dry cloth after use. Avoid water, humidity, and direct sunlight. Store separately to prevent scratching.

Q: I've never used a hair stick before — is it difficult to learn?
Not at all. Most people get a secure hold within 2–3 tries. The basic technique: gather your hair into a loose bun, twist it once, then insert the stick diagonally through the base, angling it so it crosses underneath the bun and anchors against the scalp. For step-by-step video guides, visit our YouTube channel @thehairsticks.

Q: How do I keep it from sliding out?
Two things make the biggest difference. First, slightly dry or day-2 hair grips far better than freshly washed hair. Second, insert the stick at a diagonal angle through the base of the bun rather than straight through.

Q: Will a hair stick damage my hair?
Hair sticks are one of the gentlest hair accessories available. Unlike elastics, they create no tension or pulling on the hair shaft. Long-term hair stick users often find it reduces breakage compared to everyday clip or elastic use.

Q: Is a hair stick a good gift? What packaging does it come with?
Hair sticks make a distinctive gift — they're handcrafted, practical, and carry cultural meaning. Each piece arrives in a gift box. Feel free to message us before ordering if you need help choosing.

Q: Will the wood crack or warp over time?
Quality hardwoods like rosewood, sandalwood, and ebony are dense and dimensionally stable. To keep them in good condition, apply a small amount of camellia oil or coconut oil to the shaft every 2–3 months. Avoid prolonged soaking in water or leaving in direct sunlight for extended periods.

Q: Is the wood safe for color-treated or chemically processed hair?
Yes. Natural, untreated wood contains no synthetic chemicals that could affect hair dye, keratin treatments, or bleached hair. Our wooden sticks are finished with natural oils only — no varnishes or synthetic coatings that could transfer to hair.

Q: Will the shell wings chip or fall off over time?
The shell wings are securely set in a gold-plated copper frame and affixed to the wood prongs. With normal use and care (avoiding drops and moisture), the inlay should remain intact. However, like all natural shell, it can chip if struck against a hard surface.
