This hair stick combines black sandalwood with cloisonné enamel, a technique where thin gold-plated copper wires are soldered onto a metal base to form compartments. Each compartment is filled with blue-green enamel paste, then fired and polished smooth. The design includes a red agate ruyi (auspicious scepter) motif, with turquoise accents on the ruyi, red jadeite set within the blue areas, and freshwater pearls encircling the pattern.
The wood shaft is hand-carved to fit the cloisonné topper seamlessly. The gold-plated copper outlines catch light, while the enamel retains a slight translucency that deepens with wear.

Black sandalwood (Dalbergia fusca) is a dense hardwood native to Yunnan, China. It has a fine, even grain and a natural dark brown to black color, sometimes with subtle red streaks. The wood is naturally fragrant, with a mild, sweet scent that persists for years.
